Ultrasound abdomen : Fasting for 8 to 12 hours required. For an examination of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, or spleen, you need to eat a fat-free meal the evening before your test and then to fast until the procedure. However, you can continue to drink water and take any medications as instructed. Depending on the area being examined, you may need to change positions during the scan so the doctor can have better access.
Ultrasound lower abdomen and pelvis: Drink water and hold urine so that bladder is full and better visualized. Scanning of female lower abdomen can be done through trans- abdominal and trans- vaginal routes.
Antenatal scans: No fasting required., Mild distension of urinary bladder may be required for evaluation of cervix.
Be sure to tell the doctor about any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or herbal supplements that you take before the exam. It’s important to follow doctor’s instructions and ask questions if any before the procedure.
